Latif Bolat - Turkish music
A native of the Turkish Mediterranean town of Mersin, Latif Bolat has taught traditional music throughout Eastern Anatolia. Before immigrating to the United States Bolat managed a musical theater company, which performed traditional musical plays. Now residing in California, Mr. Bolat is one of the most distinguished Turkish musicians in the United States.
With a vast repertoire that includes songs in classical, folk and Sufi music styles, Bolat performs on the baglama (long-necked lute), and various other Turkish traditional instruments. He is currently the Artistic Director of the San Francisco-based Latif Bolat Turkish Music Ensemble. He also serves as musical director for the Mevlevi Association of America, a Sufi dance organization which stages public performances with live Turkish music.
Bolat has performed in venues throughout the United States as well as on television and the radio. During his visits to his homeland, Bolat has performed and lectured at various cultural institutions and conservatories in Istanbul and Ankara. The California Arts Council awarded Mr. Bolat a grant in 1991 for his contributions to the preservation of Turkish folk music.
